Kangaroo Leather General Information
Kangaroo leather is considered an exotic leather in Europe. In Australia, however, it is used in the same way as deer leather is used here. As natural predators decrease and the number of kangaroos rises, they are hunted. The meat is usually processed into dog food in Australia or shipped abroad.
Kangaroo Leather Properties/Processing
The leather is known for being very tear-resistant and stable. However, it can be processed thinner than cowhide. Usually, the thickness of kangaroo leather is 1mm, while cowhide is typically 1.2mm to 1.4mm. Nevertheless, kangaroo leather is twice as tear-resistant and absorbs only half as much water.
It is often used in footwear, boots, gloves, and motorcycle clothing. It is usually chrome-tanned and is visually very difficult to distinguish from cowhide.
